Call me… No wait, text me
September 16, 2008 on 8:01 am | In technology |I noticed a slight generation gap the other day as I chatted with a few of my coworkers before a meeting began. Here was the main difference:
Coworker in her late 50’s: I don’t even have a cell phone. And I don’t answer my home phone half the time. People who call me know when to call me if they want me to pick up.
Me: I don’t even have a home phone. I don’t always answer my cell phone, but my friends know that if it’s important, they can always text me.
I can’t even imagine not having a cell phone. It seems so inconvenient. I get a small taste of it when I’m in the Target that we frequent and I have no signal. I have to spend like, minutes trying to figure out where Brandon is. Minutes that I could be spending not looking for him. I would never want to go back to the days when people had to wait around at home if they were expecting a phone call. Or set a time to meet when they’re shopping at the mall.
Honestly, I’ve gotten to a point where I’m most comfortable e-mailing (or instant messaging) people that I need to contact rather than calling them or speaking to them in person (unless I know them really well or they’re ridiculously close by). I feel like it’s more polite to e-mail, because they can get to it in their own time. And they can have a moment to consider their reply, rather than answering quickly so that there isn’t an awkward pause in the conversation. It probably sounds like I’ve reached a new level when it comes to being an introvert, but I don’t think it’s that, really. I’m just polite.

I don’t have texting for free on my phone, but if I did, I’d use it all the time. I’m not a “phone” person. I’d MUCH rather talk to you in person. I hate conversations over the phone. This is why:
1) When you’re talking over eachother in person, you can both hear/understand what the other person is saying…if you talk over eachother on the phone, both of you can only hear your own voices
2) I have friends who tend to go on, and on, and on…just say what you have to say, and let’s move on with our lives!
3) I’m the kind of person who thinks sitting on the couch and talking on the phone is boring, so I either wear a hole in the carpet walking around, or I try to multi-task, in which case, I’m not giving you my full attention.
Ahhh, the good days will come when we can add texting to our phone plan.

Brandon’s definitely like that. He’s not a phone person. Which makes it amazing that we were able to keep up a long-distance relationship.
