School, friends, and Labor Day

September 4, 2007 on 9:35 am | In holiday, school |

I start school this evening. I’m interested in seeing what this will be like. I already know my classes will be much smaller than when I was at Irvine Valley College, so that could be good. I’m sort of dreading how busy I’ll be; I’ll be at school from 6:00-10:40 pm twice a week. But I’m very excited about being back in school and finishing my degree.

The weekend rather flew by. We visited my home town and spent time with friends and family. It’s getting harder and harder to get together with friends. Everyone is so busy, and really Labor Day is one of the only holidays that people aren’t expected to spend nearly exclusively with family.

It’s kind of depressing to realize that we’re just all growing up and growing apart. But it’s part of life I guess. It’s funny how in middle and high school I was always trying to get away from my family, wanting to spend all of my time with my friends who actually “got me.” You know, what with my uniqueness and my need to rebel in a tame way that wouldn’t cause longterm consequences. But as I get older I realize that family is far more constant. They’re there for me, loving me the same as when I pushed them away.

Anyway, I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend (you know, all of my hundreds of readers). Try not to yawn too much at work today.

  1. Yeah, growing apart from friends is pretty depressing. It really hits me when they tell me about their cool careers and then I introduce them to my children… It’s especially weird because I was that “I’m never getting married because boys suck” girl.

I loved your line about being a “rebel.” I still think you’re hardcore ;)

  2. Ha! I am hardcore. What with my wild domestic lifestyle.

You know, I bet your friends’ careers aren’t all that. Sure, maybe they’re finally experiencing “real” jobs. But it usually sounds a lot more fun or important than it really is. Maybe when they’re 30 they can brag. Heh.
