We Have a Winner

I went to the dentist for a cleaning/checkup yesterday. Whenever I go, I try to explain to the dental hygienist that I have very sensitive gums. Hearing this seems to be a treat for them, because they then say that it’s because I don’t floss enough. Then they lecture me and tell me I must not be doing it right. But I am. It’s just that my gums aren’t made of steel, and when poked and prodded by a dull needle (which is basically what their dental tools are) my gums bleed.

On the assumption that I don’t floss enough, the particular dental hygienist that cleaned my teeth seemed to increase her zeal in assaulting my gums. It was as though her pointed dental tool were a quarter and my gums were a lotto ticket, and by God she was going to find a winning square. After her assault was over, she even handed me a mirror to inspect “what happens to your gums when you don’t floss.” What she meant to say is, “this is what happens when you don’t floss and I take my wrath out on you to teach you a lesson.” Afterward I made a special trip to Target to purchase Anbesol, a numbing/cooling gel that, along with two advil, helped take the pain away.

By the way, I’m still holding my no cavity record. Despite my wussy gums.

Soliciting meal ideas

So now that I’m going to school full time and working full time, I literally have no time to cook healthy dinners. I’ve searched around on the internet for “fast, healthy dinner solutions,” but I haven’t really found anything suitable. They’re always like “have pasta on hand, cook these 20-minute meals, buy a whole bunch of ingredients because surely you have time to spend perusing the grocery store aisles.” And I’m like, no, you don’t get it. NO TIME HERE. Seriously. Twice a week I don’t get home until 11 pm. And when I am home, I’m writing papers and reading. So seriously, I need ideas for non-fast food meals so that my husband and I don’t have heart attacks in the time it’ll take for us to get our degrees (Spring 2009).

So far my solution has been getting a bag of salad and rotisserie chicken from the Deli at our local Kroger. But we can’t live off that forever.

So does anyone have ideas for quick, no I mean QUICK (I’m talking instant), meals that are reasonably priced?

No one glares at you online

Dear old guy in the lingerie section of Macy’s,

You know that look I gave you? When you were way too close for comfort and inspecting that pair of undies? Yeah, that was a “go away, pervert” look. I understand that some men have good reason to go into the lingerie section, buying gifts for girlfriends, wives, and mistresses. But I have a feeling that wasn’t what you were there for. Which is why I gave you that look. Next time try not to look so skeevy. Or better yet, shop online.

Sincerely, Me.

Randomness!

September 10, 2007 on 9:32 am | In random | No Comments

My site is the #2 hit for clairol.com because of this blog from nearly a year ago. It features the Dane with different hair styles, including an up-do for prom. That blog, along with Stumble Upon and the search result for “dogs have the cleanest mouths”, accounts for the majority of my hits. Which is fine I guess. I just wonder how many visitors who found my site that way actually stick around and keep reading.

Someone once told me that the way to get more hits is to have a main theme with the blog. Like mommy bloggers and knitting bloggers. But I do have a theme. A continuing loyalty to randomness. Because who can’t identify with a cat-owning twenty-something who has moved across the country twice, married at a young age, loves ranting, and listens to bands that once had indie cred but have signed on major labels?

So I will continue with the randomness! But back to that indie band thing. It’s so hard for me to continue to like bands after they’ve signed on to major labels (admittedly, I generally stumble upon a band five minutes before they get their big break). I used to love me some Dashboard Confessional, but then they became MTV darlings and I noticed 13-year-olds quoting the band in their AIM profiles, and it became really hard to listen to “Again I Go Unnoticed.” And I thought of an analogy that sort of explains it. Listening to bands that once were nobodies but then made it big is sort of like having a crush, but then finding out that that person has slept with the whole school already. It cheapens it, even though the band is probably quite happy about it.

So anyway, happy Monday.

Evoluting or Normal?

So we noticed today that Monster has a second set of fangs on his bottom teeth (here you see him biting Brandon’s thumb). He uses the ones he already has pretty often, so I guess extra would just be icing on the cake. Are the extra fangs normal? Are they just baby teeth that haven’t fallen out yet? Or is our kitty evolving to compensate for his trimmed-down claws?

School, friends, and Labor Day

September 4, 2007 on 9:35 am | In holiday, school | 2 Comments

I start school this evening. I’m interested in seeing what this will be like. I already know my classes will be much smaller than when I was at Irvine Valley College, so that could be good. I’m sort of dreading how busy I’ll be; I’ll be at school from 6:00-10:40 pm twice a week. But I’m very excited about being back in school and finishing my degree.

The weekend rather flew by. We visited my home town and spent time with friends and family. It’s getting harder and harder to get together with friends. Everyone is so busy, and really Labor Day is one of the only holidays that people aren’t expected to spend nearly exclusively with family.

It’s kind of depressing to realize that we’re just all growing up and growing apart. But it’s part of life I guess. It’s funny how in middle and high school I was always trying to get away from my family, wanting to spend all of my time with my friends who actually “got me.” You know, what with my uniqueness and my need to rebel in a tame way that wouldn’t cause longterm consequences. But as I get older I realize that family is far more constant. They’re there for me, loving me the same as when I pushed them away.

Anyway, I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend (you know, all of my hundreds of readers). Try not to yawn too much at work today.
